The ITIN (Individual Tax ID Number) is issued for individuals that cannot obtain a social security number and who also come to the U.S from our neighbor countries, Mexico and Canada. The ITIN does not take the place of a social security number or qualify the applicant for social security benefits; it is issued to individuals for the purpose of filing a tax return. When applying for the first time, the applicant must file a tax return along with the ITIN application.
